The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

by Mark Haddon (New York, Vintage Contemporaries).
A quick read and entertaining. At times the autistic young hero’s voice is a bit grating and his mathematical, scientific, and philosophical excursions are a bit shallow, yet still interesting. All in keeping with his character certainly. It was painful to be reminded of the academic reactions to Vos Savant’s Monty Hall problem and solution . The solution to his “A Levels Maths” exam problem in the appendix applies the lesser-known converse of the Pythagorean theorem , (at least I had forgotten about it).
